Originally, these types of collars (the martingale collar), were designed for dogs whose necks were wider or larger their heads. It will buckle collar on dogs of this type would mean that they would have to be uncomfortably tight.

The types of dogs which fall into this group include breeds like whippets, greyhounds and Italian greyhounds. These related breeds are generally known as “sighthounds” and characteristically have heads which are slender in comparison to their muscular necks.
Not only is it difficult to fit such breeds with a standard collar, the danger of the dog escaping is high as they tend to back that of a normal collar, because it will fit over their head.

In fact, the Martingale collar was so effective for these breeds, is also commonly known as a “greyhound” collar.

The origin of the word martingale is difficult to track and it's not only used as in martingale dog collars, but also is very common as part of the horse industry. What is common between the two types of apparatus is a base employee a series of rings to help control either the dog or the horse.

Since their wide acceptance into the sighthound breeds, they have become very popular for all kinds shapes sizes and styles of dogs. Although the principal of operation is somewhat the same as choke collar, it's much more  gentle and more comfortable for the dog. Never use this type of collar to tether your dog. While its fine to use the collar on a day to day basis, if you are going to use it to train the dog, then it helps just to adjust slightly tighter for the training session then relax the adjustment a little when its over.. The Martingale collar is designed to use with your dog on a leash.

Fitting your collar.
To measure your dog for collar, take the measurement of the circumference of their neck just behind the ears (near the start of the neck). It's best to use a piece of cord or twine and draw it until it's snugly and firmly around the neck.
Martingale dog collars are measured from ring end to ring end, so having taken your measurement, that's the size you should order.
Most show dog enthusiasts prefer the martingale collar because it will not crush the trachea or mark or ruffle the fur.
